Our client - a multidisciplinary engineering and consulting organization delivering water, wastewater, and infrastructure solutions for public-sector clients - is seeking a highly experienced Principal Engineer to provide senior-level technical leadership for complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects based in Indianapolis.
Their teams partner closely with communities to plan, design, and implement resilient systems that meet regulatory requirements and long-term operational needs. This role represents the highest level of engineering responsibility, combining strategic oversight, technical excellence, and mentorship to guide critical projects that support public health and environmental sustainability.
responsibilities.
Lead all phases of large-scale and technically complex wastewater infrastructure projects from planning through construction
Develop and oversee advanced engineering designs, technical reports, specifications, and contract documents
Serve as a subject matter expert to resolve highly complex technical challenges across multiple projects and teams
Plan, coordinate, and manage detailed project tasks in collaboration with engineering and project management staff
Conduct engineering studies, investigations, and evaluations for clients, regulatory agencies, and internal leadership
Provide senior-level technical review and mentorship to engineering staff at varying career stages
Support quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure technical accuracy and regulatory compliance
Prepare technical proposals and deliver presentations to clients, public stakeholders, and regulatory bodies
Contribute to business practices, project delivery standards, and continuous improvement initiatives
qualifications.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred
Minimum of 15 years of progressive engineering experience in water or wastewater infrastructure
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
Advanced knowledge of engineering principles and wastewater treatment and conveyance systems
Proficiency with industry-standard design, modeling, and documentation software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, and similar tools)
Strong understanding of QA/QC procedures, engineering regulations, and professional practice standards
Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in a collaborative environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Participation in professional engineering organizations is preferred
